The Synthesis report (44 pages), presenting the main outcomes and findings of the Biogasmax project, is published. Lessons from experiences of six European demonstration sites are described and show that biométhane is a great way of turning waste into transport fuel.
This 44-page report summaries the 25 technical final reports produced by the European Commission - funded Consortium between 2006 and end-2010.

The provision and use of biomethane as a substitute for natural gas is considered to be a sustainable technology. But exactly how sustainable is it? How can sustainability be quantified at all? Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an internationally accepted tool for the provision of information about the environmental relevance of products and services. Biogasmax conducted LCA studies of biomethane from the participating plants across Europe. As the project results of BIOGASMAX show, biomethane offers great reduction potential compared to fossil fuels, since between 50 to 70 % less climate impact than natural gas over the entire life cycle. Since natural gas is considered rather clean compared to fossil fuels, biomethane comes out with even lower emissions against gasoline and diesel. The dedicated evaluation report contains the complete portfolio of impact categories.

ConVoco, the Biogasmax partner leading the transfer of knowledge in Poland and new member states, have recently invited to Poland a group of international experts to talk with interested cities about today's challenges in the area of transport as part of sustainable urban development. The conference gathered representatives from fourteen countries, including high level officials from 20 cities from the new member states and from the neighbouring countries of the EU.
The event was carried out under the auspices of Poland's Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Infrastructure, and with input from the European Commission.

Grid injection in France was first discussed in 1989 (in a project in Amiens). The national guidance published in 2004 as part of a national law on the opening of the gas market gave the possibility of injecting biomethane into the natural gas grid. Possibility was given to the central administration to carry out a health assessment.

In November 2004, five key points were identified by stakeholders for additional surveys: health, gas standards, grid system integrity, injection unit and contractual aspects. A common work on gas standards for grid injection was made between 2005 and 2007, on the basis of Lille experience. In October 2008, the National Health Agency (AFSSET) published the health assessment: it concluded that using biomethane does not face additional dangers when compared with the use of natural gas.

A National Working Group on Grid injection, launched at the end of 2008 by both the Sustainable Development and Agriculture Ministries, identified the ways of supporting biomethane production and grid injection. Feed-in tariffs should be published end of this year or early 2011.
